Birthstones are a long accepted and cherished tradition. One that is ever growing in popularity. Typically birthstones are gifted for anniversaries and birthdays, they also make an incredible gift for any occasion. Did you know that birthstones are deeply rooted in history? Gemstones have signified important events and people for most of recorded history. They have been attributed to a variety of unique properties and mystical powers. (Amethyst keeps you sober when drinking….according to legends.)
The origins of birthstones can be traced back to the Breastplate of Aaron. You can find them described in the Book of Exodus in the Bible. His breastplate proudly displayed 12 unique gemstones, each symbolic of one of the 12 tribes of Israel. They were described as being set in four rows of three gemstones each row.
Although birthstones can be traced back to religious origins, modern day tradition dictates that the stones are assigned based on birth month. Scholar Flavius Josephus of the first century A.D. and St. Jerome of the fifth century A.D. were among the first to realize there was a connection between the 12 stones in the Breastplate and the 12 zodiac signs. Though the 18th century was the first time that gemstones started to become assigned to a birth month.
The National Association of Jewelers defined what is now the modern day list of birthstones in 1912. This list has largely remained unchanged to this day.
